What are your ecommerce goals for 2020? Increase sales, drive conversion and generally make more money? That puts you alongside every other brand selling products on the web. But how can turn those goals into reality? Well, you should probably start with your delivery strategy…
We all know that e-commerce is moving so fast that by the time you’ve got your head around one innovation the next “game-changer” is rearing its head. There are, however, a number of relatively simple ways you can boost sales by improving your delivery strategy.
If your delivery strategy is rock solid and innovative, your customers are happy. If your customers are happy you are going to make more money – and be happier.
So let’s get to it. Here are five ways you can increase conversion through your delivery strategy:
1. Save personalised delivery preferences
Have your customers speed through the checkout in no time by remembering their previous delivery choice, and offering it at the top of the list of delivery options.
For this to work you need to have repeat customers of course. But with forms being a well know sales-killer, once you’ve shown how easy it is to check out with your brand, they are bound to be coming back for more.
2. Provide Track & Trace on returns
It is relatively standard practice to send out track and trace updates when you are shipping your packages out to your customers. What is less common is for this to happen when your customers need to return an item.
Returns are one of the biggest pain points in e-commerce. Just think about how many times you have kept something you weren’t convinced about, simply because you couldn’t face the hassle of sending it back to the brand.
Make life a little easier for your customers in 2020, by making tracking updates on return shipments part of your delivery strategy.

3. Deliver anywhere and everywhere your customers are
Offer delivery options to all the places your customers may want to receive their packages, or get them to visit your brick and mortar stores by offering click & collect . In our Green delivery and three other e-commerce trends to watch in 2020 blog post, we discussed ship from store as a method to get products to customers quicker. People are leading busier lives and are often hindered in their ability to be available to receive their packages, so missed deliveries are on the increase. By giving them a wide variety of options, your delivery hit-rate will almost certainly improve.
If you haven’t yet, why not think about increasing your use of pick-up points? Whether these are your brand stores (click & collect), lockers, gift shops, supermarkets or corner shops, if you are offering them all, there should be one which fits your customers’ busy schedules and is close to either home, work, schools or other frequented locations.
Paazl displays all pick-up points from multiple delivery carriers and own-brand stores on an interactive map. We also include opening times so your customers know when they can collect their precious packages.
4. Be specific
This is on a similar vein to the point above and focusses on making the delivery experience as painless as possible for your customers. They don’t have time to sit around waiting for a delivery, and even if they did, they probably don’t want to. If there is no clarity regarding delivery date and/or time, cart abandonment becomes a real possibility.
Consumers want specifics. They want to know when their delivery will be arriving. That means the day and if possible the hour. And they want this information before they part with their money.
That’s why you need software which calculates the delivery options on each order, so you can offer time slots and an accurate estimated time of arrival in the pre-purchase stage.
5. Be global, act local
You may be operating on a global scale, but your customers want a local experience. This means speaking the local lingo – as well as offering the local delivery carriers they know and love.
By localizing your web shop, and in particular your checkout, you are bound to increase sales and customer trust.
